Good Year for St Rita Basketball Teams

Basketball officially ended this week when the B Girls defeated Assumption on our court. The B Girls lost only once this year, at Assumption. The B Boys went through the season undefeated. Both the Varsity Boys and the Varsity Girls advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" of the 64-team CYO Playoffs. With 145+ schools participating in the CYO program, this was quite an accomplishment. The Varsity Girls lost to St. Jane Frances who went on to win CYO and the boys lost to second-seeded Beatitudes. The "JV" Boys showed a huge improvement throughout the year, culminating in a big win at St Luke last week. Congratulations are due to all who made this a very successful hoops season.

The Varsity Boys move on to Volleyball and the girls to softball. At the same time, 90 athletes are running track on the six different levels. Competition for softball and volleyball begins later in the month, while track opens up on March 10 at Damien High School in La Verne.

Varsity Girls Have Miracle Playoff Win

After trailing for 39 minutes and 38 seconds of a 40 minute game, St. Rita's Varsity Girl's basketball team pulled off a stunning victory at La Salle High School today. Cold shooting caused the Raiders to fall behind by double digits in the first half. St. Rita continued to trail by the same margin in the second half, until their superior conditioning and depth came into play. They slowly clawed their way back against the Big East Conference Champion, Delores Mission. The Raiders pressured their fatigued opponents into a number of turnovers and with under 30 seconds to go, they had trimmed the lead to 3 points.

With under 20 seconds to go, Hanna Howard was all net on a 3-point shot to tie the score. St. Rita committed a defensive foul, seding Delores Mission to the line with 8 seconds remaining. They hit the first of two free throws to lead by one. The second shot was a miss and Kathleen Brady went coast to coast to hit a lay up between two defenders as time expired, giving the Raiders an incredible win.

Key to the victory was a large and supportive Raider crowd. Hopefully, that same crowd will cheer our team on tomorrow (Sunday 2/12) at La Salle. The girls take on Mountain Conference Champion, St. Joseph of La Puente at 1 pm. Remember there is an admission charge of $5 for adults. Grade 8 and below is free.
